White Rock Transfer - 1943
In 1988 Bob & Jacqueline Yearsley renovated the building at14955 Victoria Avenue for their Interior Design business “Individual Interiors”.
On a visit to White Rock Mr. & Mrs. Roddick entered the store and introduced themselves as relatives of the original owners, they then handed me a photograph of the building when first built in 1943. Jim Roddick proceeded to tell me some history of the building and local area.
The building was built for Frank Best’s transfer company, “White Rock Transfer” with both family’s living in the apartments above.
Prior to 1943 the land and surroundings had been a gravel pit, gravel from the pit being used to form the basis of Victoria Avenue. He remembered a row of houses built on the bank behind the store, sandwiched between Beachview and Victoria Avenue with a lane leading up from Victoria Avenue and on Marine Drive (previously Washington Avenue) an Earthquake rattled & broke all the store windows. No glass was broken in their building at 14955 Victoria Avenue. An Indian dug out canoe stored at the rear of the property was stolen by two young men. Legend has it the canoe sank in the bay with the loss of both lives.

Prior to Renovating in 1988
Changing hands over the years the store later became the Rendezvous Restaurant, Clifford Bros, a Hardware store, and a Real Estate Company and then in 1988 Individual Interiors ltd. opened its doors. The store was filled with all the accoutrements of a flourishing Interior Design business, serving the local area, Whistler, Calgary & Edmonton. Sadly health intervened and I had to retire.

Individual Interiors (Post Renovation - 1988)
There were a few renters but none stayed as long as “Daisy” with her Vintage clothing store. Although she had known for a long time that the shop and building were to be demolished, when given her notice she was so dismayed, the bombastic lady with a heart of gold was furious and said, at 91 years of age, “I have 10 good years left & I’m not ready to sit on my arse all day”.

“Beachside Guest Suites” was also closed.
The demolition was not a moment to soon, the week before demolition one of the two front pillars tumbled to where, moments before, a car had been parked.
A sad ending to a building once dubbed “Queen Vicky”.
But now we have a new and exciting venture..
